2:49Oti: A sharp whodunit hook draws you in, even for newcomers. The pacing lingers too long at times, but the intrigue lasts just enough to keep you chasing answers and waterfalls.

3:03KT: Is that part of the official pull quote?

3:05KT: Okay. Like Conan, One-Eye Flashback is fun, smart, and delightful. The characters introduced make the intrigue and mystery worth the journey.

3:19Oti: Mm agree.

3:22KT: A bit of qualm. A bit of qualm here and there, but overall, okay. You know, like I, friends and lovers, I'm not necessarily like I knew about Conan the detective anime. I've never watched it. Um, I, I guess perhaps maybe you can, uh, give a bit more context to your sort of qualms, but for what it was, I enjoyed it. Um, I think the insula story. Was interesting in and of itself, even without Conan just focusing even on Yamato.

3:54Oti: Mm.

3:54KT: I feel like he's my greatest love that I've lost forever. Um, like I really enjoyed what was in the film. I think the storytelling style, it's, it's so interesting because it was obviously animated in a very crispy way, but it was very retro storytelling, so it was kind of like a shock. To the system because I guess we're so used to a different sort of storytelling. Um, and this one kind of leaned more on like traditional sort of storytelling. Oh, I,

4:27Oti: I thought that animation sort of looked retro True in itself.

4:31KT: Yeah. But you know what I mean, like, it's, it's clear It's not like one 70 p or something.

4:37Oti: Yeah. Oh, it, it was crispy. Um, I, I guess. I never watched Conan before this.

4:45KT: Yeah.

4:45Oti: It's one of those things you hear about you people love it. Has a big fan base out there. I guess watching this, the i I, I love a good whodunit. It provided us all with the ingredients that it was all there. We needed to like have the tinted hooks to just keep on pulling you in. Uhhuh. It's more, you know, how you are watching, um, I'm not gonna spoil anything, but you are watching Sandman and you're like. I was telling you we needed the world to understand, you know, world building is quite important. Yeah. And maybe that's just my fault for not knowing anything about Conan going in.

5:22KT: Yeah.

5:22Oti: And wondering why he's doing some weird shit, but still being treated as a kid. And that's why I was like, oh, what's going on here? And that's why I was like, I need to know more.

5:34KT: Well, Magee talks like that from Jujutsu Kaisen, but that because trauma, but yes, and I, I wouldn't necessarily say it's a spoiler. I think it's just a gap that we have. 'cause we didn't watch Conan the Detective, but when we realized. The origin, I, I, without spoiling, when we realized the origin of Conan's character, I felt a bit better about that because precocious kids isn't really my thing. Um, I'm pretty sure it was once upon a time in Hollywood was it, where there was like a little precocious kid in there. Mm. Um, but yeah. But again, if we're just focusing on the mystery with Yamato. Again, I, I will think of him fondly, um, as well. But I, I enjoyed it. It, it was a bit of a longer sort of runtime.

6:26Oti: It was,

6:27KT: um, I wouldn't say that it, it, it became onerous, but it, it definitely made its point maybe in some places.

6:35Oti: Oh, the points in the movie, I thought we were done, only for me to realize there's still a longer stretch to go. Mm-hmm. Um, and that's where, where it was like. It sort of wasn't your classic whodunit because we go past that point.

6:52KT: But I think it's more like you knew where it was going.

6:57Oti: Yes, I knew. So it wasn't

6:58KT: as if like, I think it was more that the, the point it was reinforcing was reinforced a few times.

7:05Oti: Right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Overall it was, it was good to sort of delve into this world as a newcomer where. In my pull quote. It was really intriguing to sort of get to know the characters, um, and just how they deduce things. You know, it, it doesn't feel gimmicky. It's well thought out,

7:28KT: but who do you think you are? This is the 28th film. Why each, why did you say Superman doesn't need to explain? And now you're saying Conan the disciple. I did not

7:36Oti: say in any tools. How

7:37KT: does, how does Conan on his little shoulders have more responsibility than your, uh, Clark Kents. But you know that, that's why, 'cause usually, like, you know, when we give first impressions, when we give pull quotes, I will give an indication of where I feel like. It didn't necessarily do it for me, but I, I can't be mad at it. It is what it is.

8:41KT: Which is a prequel. If you were to watch the second season. It is a, a major arc in season two. Um, so we're going to give our non-spoiler pull quotes, but I guess also keep in mind that it is. A part of season two, it's a bit different to, um, like Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye where you had like a recap and then three new episodes. Um, but yeah. So give us your non-spoiler first impressions, Oti.

9:16Oti: A big-screen retelling of season two's arc, diving into Gojo and Geto's bond and purpose. Familiar, yes. But for fans, more Geto-Gojo is always a welcome treat,

9:29KT: Ghetto Superstar. It is Geto. Um, but we're watching English Dub. They kept saying gto gato. That's why High Bar wasn't, wasn't much for time. Um, but I, I guess the preface we would put here is we. Usually always definitely watch subs. Um, so this film was in dub, uh, and it, I guess it was interesting because we had just binged leading up to the screening, the media screening for this film. Mm-hmm. Um, it is essentially the first five episodes of the second season. But if you also keep in mind the second season aired years ago.

10:16Oti: Mm-hmm.

10:17KT: Um, it, it was a nice sort of refresher, Oti. I've actually watched Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death twice. Now

10:25Oti: you have,

10:26KT: um, shout outs to Talitha. Um, so we went to the media screening, um, prior to release, and then I went, uh, with Talitha to go and to get some more Geto loving.

10:36Oti: He, well, yeah. Yeah.

10:40KT: We, we started to see the shonen demographic and I was, I was texting Talitha, and I was like, I'm pretty sure these little kids are in our screening. Um, but yeah. What did you, I, I guess we've never really covered Jujutsu Kaisen. Um, on the podcast. So I guess feel free to give like a little taste. I'm sure eventually we'll do like a full episode, but I guess before you talk about the film, give us a little taster about, um, your general thoughts on Jujutsu Kaisen the anime, and then we'll go to the film.

11:09Oti: Um, every time I think about JJK, I just think of you saying, man anime.

11:15KT: It is a man anime.

11:18Oti: Uh, but it's, it's rewatching it again, I sort of appreciated it more in a, in a more bingeable format.

11:28KT: Appreciated or accepted,

11:30Oti: appreciated it because I think with the sort of weekly format for JJK, you get, you get this. 20. If, if even then maybe 18, 15 minutes of, of snippets where it's so little covered within a short time span where if it's in, let's say the latest season where you get the Shibuya arc, you know, it, it felt, ooh, fight, fight, fight. But in a sort of bingeable form, you get to sort of. Get the story behind it more.

12:00KT: Yeah. You know,

12:01Oti: it, it felt more, oh, okay, I'm going on a journey rather than boom, ba boom, ba bam, you know,

12:08KT: the type of shit because you one you wouldn't understand. Yeah, no, I get you. I understand. Um. It, it definitely feels like very early, like I think it was one of the first episodes, um, where Yuji is learning to harness his energy and he is holding onto the bear and he is watching those films.

12:30Oti: Mm-hmm.

12:31KT: That felt very relatable. Um, but that's kind of how JJK feels like when you condense it all. You really get into it. And that's also what I really loved about this film. Um, I think Gojo for me is very much the emotional sort of heartbeat. And maybe that is controversial to say 'cause Yuji is our like center and our core. But if you're talking about where you draw emotion from when you're watching the first two seasons, it is Gojo. Yeah. And he, not just like the levity, but like he has a groundedness that he didn't necessarily have in this film, but he just has a groundedness in general. He's very much trying to work within the system. He's kind of like, remember how we watched Boys State and we're like, these old conservatives just need to fucking die. Like Gojo was like that. Oh Lord. Like let's get rid of the higher ups and let's build a new world. That makes sense. For the jujutsu users, for the non-jujutsu users. Um, but I, yeah, I, I would call Jujutsu Kaisen a man anime. And the reason why I would call it a man anime is because there isn't a lot to feel emotionally. There isn't a lot that's tethering. We'll come to Gachiakuta in a second and, you know, somewhere in the future we'll talk about, um, Toki, but. There's a formula and I guess there's a reason to the really cool, slick sort of action scenes. Right. Mm-hmm. We don't really get to see Kugisaki, but I, she became one of my favorite, um, characters and it's, it, it's because of the emotion and like even her action scenes, um, were really super cute ga Um, but coming to Hidden Inventory, premature Death, I love her. I can just say that without having to check the title. Um, I'm full weeb, uh, friends and lovers, but what I really loved about this film is it very much focuses on. You know, Gojo and Geto, and I love how we loved your quote so much. I didn't even get to do mine. Can I quickly do mine? Oh yeah.

14:36Oti: Because

14:36KT: I was about to say what's in my quote. Hidden Inventory / Premature Death focuses on the origins and fallout of soul mate besties Gojo and Geto. Surfacing core scenes about power and responsibility in this film reinforces the heart of JJK.

14:58Oti: Yeah,

14:59KT: we talk about, you know, the greatest duo's, rivals of all time, Naruto, Sasuke, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, KT, Oti. Um, and ooh, it's so delicious. It's so delicious. The overall arc. With Riko Amanai, I didn't necessarily care for if we're being very real, if we're being very honest. But what I really thought was quite interesting about this film is the way we're introduced to Gojo in the series is that he's very assured. He's very kind, but he's so strong. It doesn't make sense that he's so kind. Right. But he's very sweet. He's very kind. He's very personable and Geto. Man's is evil, right? Like, that's just point blank in the series. When we're in this film, it's kind of like a switch, like a swap, um, of the, the sort of dynamics between the two, because Geto is. He's like, come on man, stop being so arrogant. It's very embarrassing. You'll be more personable to the, um, you know, like appeal to the higher ups, but you know, also the juniors won't be intimidated if you're a little bit nice. Right. Um, and Geto was trying to, I guess, make sense of the world and grapple with the power that he had, and there was a. There was a simmering, there was a simmering, there was an inevitability that happened with Geto, which, you know, if, if we can be very real, I feel like it was a bit lost in the English voice acting. I feel like the English voice acting when it comes to like the really peppy pep. Sort of characters when it comes to the high sort of emotions and those sorts of moments like Riko's voice acting was very good in the English voice acting, but there is a very, there's a very real helplessness that Jujutsu Kaisen distilled in the Japanese voice acting. And the reason why I say that is because friends and lovers hit me up for my daddy list, uh, in JJK, but I refer to Geto as Magneto daddy because he was absolutely right in a lot of the things that he was saying. And I feel like it wasn't necessarily conveyed in this film in particular because if we talk about the different sort of dynamics between Geto and Gojo. He shouldn't have been left alone. Like I think Gojo being powerful and doing all of the shit that he was doing on his own. It kind of left Geto to, I guess, I guess, uh, what's that word? Uh.

17:55Oti: Time with himself to simmer, I guess. And that's the thing, right? Even if those still together, I feel like it'd always come to that point where he is like, why am I continuing to do this? And they describe for what reason. They describe him, you know. Eating a dirty rug and shit. You know, like it's, yeah. It's this repetitive, repetitive or this

18:15KT: work for what? Yeah.

18:16Oti: For what? For humans

18:17KT: to just kill themselves and sacrifice their own kids. What the fuck?

18:20Oti: Yeah, he, he would've gotten there maybe slower. That's why I said it was

18:24KT: inevitable.

18:25Oti: Yeah.

18:26KT: But I think Gojo not being around

18:29Oti: it, it was a cut on the street before it just, just snap really quickly.

18:33KT: But it was so heartbreaking and it was so delicious and it was so. It was actually quite nice to revisit it because it really like, it hyper focuses on that particular arc, so we're not cutting to Yuji or Todo or tall ass ladies with the big asses.

18:50Oti: Um,

18:51KT: that blonde lady didn't have a big ass, so I don't know who she was talking about.

18:56Oti: Oh, no, you're Jennifer Lawrence.

18:58KT: No. Well, you know, I, I, I guess respect relative ass size. Uh, maybe Mei Mei got an ass under all that braid. You don't know, um, um,

19:12Oti: do you, how, how do you feel about Gojo being that overpowered and never being available? Do you feel as if it's the MCU sort of Miss Marvel, oh, I'm in another planet.

19:25KT: Or like a Raiden type thing as well?

19:28Oti: Yeah,

19:30KT: I'm excited for Mortal Kombat. That's another man anime,

19:33Oti: but Raiden can be beat, so it's not to that level really.

19:37KT: You know what, what I was coming to when we were rewatching it up to coming to this film, I feel like. The, the anime that I really love is, you need to make me believe this, right? Even think of Black Clover.

19:53Oti: Mm.

19:53KT: For example, like, make me believe. If you say you are the strongest, make me believe it. If you say, I have to care about you versus humans, make me care about it. But Piccolo, I will always be under your cape if you're nasty.

20:08Oti: Or is that because he's black?

20:10KT: My first love, um, but Jujutsu Kaisen kind of just felt like accepting for better, for worse. And I guess maybe that's why I have an infinity barrier to like my Splooshies with Jujutsu Kaisen, because you told me Gojo is the strongest. I'm like, fit. You told me Yuji is the only one that can handle Sukuna. I can handle Sukuna, but that's a story for another day.

Um, but yeah, it was very much, you just accept what they're telling you as opposed to you feeling emotionally. Invested in the particular character. So to, I guess to come to your question, I don't think it bothered me that he disappeared. Even though you have a problem with Kakashi disappearing. I think him going,

21:14Oti: Kakashi doesn't disappear. He just gets injured a lot. He's in hospital, the whole show. So, hit me.

21:23KT: We're splitting hairs. Um, no, I, I don't think, but again. Yeah, because Gojo does make or break the franchise, but I guess it's just, I, I just know I'm gonna watch 10 more fighting episodes, that's all.

21:39KT: fair. Just for them to get, I guess, a crumb of the red light, blue light that he'd be playing by himself. All right. Well, uh, we're, we're gonna continue. I believe it's been announced that the JJK, uh, season will be next year. So we've got some time to go, friends and lovers. Um, speaking of returning animes, friends and lovers. This is the Nobody Won Republic on Loop, if you will. This is Kaiju No. 8. We have loved the first season. We are currently watching the second season, friends and Lovers. 22:38Oti: He could be that too. Kafka embodies the everyday homely man with this anime, having you rooting and tooting through explosive battles, big hearted camaraderie, and an ensemble you can't help but cheer for.

Um, but yeah, like we get to experience, especially in the second season, we get more, um, you know, less, a bit of Kafka, a bit more of the supporting cast we get to see more of Naro and Koru. Oh, I used to have Omi. Exactly. She fucking hated the guts in the first season.

24:48KT: But you know, you know, that's the anime trick. Give them a fucking backstory. Maybe a dead parent here and there in Marin. Uh,

24:57Oti: I don't know why I thought his, her dad would be an absent father.

25:02KT: He gives absent father in stature and

25:04Oti: demeanor. Yeah, but he was there in all the flashbacks. He was. He was in the pictures, yeah, in the picnics. He was formative in the formative years. I thought, I'd have to say the stepfather that stepped up, but no man. The dad was there.

25:20Oti: the dad That dad duck. Yeah. Uh, but we're taking on a rollercoaster, Johnny, the second season. It just gets better and better. You know how we watched. Uh, Solo Leveling and we had gone to the screener for the movie and it just expounded the world so much in bringing everything together to see why the show would go.

25:43Oti: this is doing a similar thing. It's just punching levels known, and I'm here for it. I love it. I

25:52KT: love it. I love it. Um, it's so cool. I, I love it. I love a place where I can rest my heart feelings. Um, and Kafka is a lot of fun. I don't, I don't even know what you're talking about. If you wanna have aqua, look at the garden variety of Hollywood. Uh. Movie star actors that we're looking at now. You know when you go to supermarkets and then they have a different section for the misshapen. Um, good personality, fruits and vegetables,

26:25KT: Why don't you look there? Leave my Kafka alone. He can be homely in my bosoms. I love

26:41KT: You're with your Ashiro body pillow. I love the world of Kaiju No. 8 because I feel like it focuses on story be before it focuses on the world. Um, and we really get to care about the characters. Um, whilst also wondering what sort of impending doom is awaiting. The world because of these kaijus that are coming up and because these kaijus are also intelligent as well.

27:13Oti: Mm-hmm. Yeah. And, and, and I guess the thing about it is, is also growing. It's not like he is, you know, aura farming to the point where he's only making himself available when he's needed.

27:27KT: Yeah.

27:29Oti: Um, but yeah, really, really good anime.

27:32KT: I like how you keep comparing it Solo Leveling. It's 'cause we both watch them at the same time,

27:37Oti: same time.

27:37KT: And the first, the first season, we watched both of them at the same time. And I actually enjoy Kaiju number and I'm pretty sure I said that when we did our Solo Leveling um, review. But it's just, I think even the way that we're introduced to Kafka, like he's just an everyday sort of cleaner and he has, he does the grunt work. So you have, you know, you have all of the captains and you know, the, all of the squads that get all of the glory. And then you have him here just trying to, he's just trying to make it work, baby,

28:07Oti: actually. Do you think in anime, the protagonist has to have a struggle? Like Naruto? We get Oh, just

28:15KT: in anime in real life too.

28:16Oti: We, we get, um, oh, Naruto went through so fucking much. Mm. That you can't help but ru. Is that any way you can just, no, because

28:26KT: Bleach like. He didn't go through anything. He wasn't homely. He was like good looking. He was cool.

28:36Oti: Homely doesn't mean that someone's not good looking. He just feels like someone, Hey, eh, you know?

28:42KT: What does that mean? I dunno. Like do you mean that he has a nice, a nice soft body to lay your head on? I don't think that's bad at all.

29:02KT: But I enjoy, I enjoy Kaiju No. 8 again. It is like our peak enjoyment for the week every Sunday. Um, watching Kaiju No. 8. And yeah, it really is building out the world and I guess where that's going to come to.

29:20KT: we need to cover Bleach as well. We have so many anime we need to cover.

29:47Oti: We can always find value in trash. Gachiakuta spins that truth into a striking anime. Beautifully animated, heartfelt, and brimming with timely themes of inequality and resilience.

From the opening scene, we are introduced to the same conflict Rudo experiences in the world of haves and have nots. Each episode we build emotional resonance with the characters and world.

30:31KT: Smy Baby, that, that would be the episode title if we did a full review. Um, friends and Lovers, but wow. Wow, wow. I think we're about five episodes in, um, to this anime. I think we just saw it on Crunchyroll and I was like, let's give this one a go.

31:26KT: If you compare, like I'm ignoring you, if you compare the animated sequence, like the water flowing, the water breathing technique with T, right? If you compare that to this motherfucker rolling around in the garbage, like it looks good, but I don't think I would say it was be beautifully

31:48Oti: animated. No, it's beautiful. Like in the latest episode, we get to see him sort of. Don't spoil too much. I'm not gonna spoil anything. But we get to see him in his element and that is beautifully done. It's nothing scruffy. It's not your Blue Lock PowerPoint presentation. It's good. So to levels where he feels yes, it's been done in a grand way's. Quality. I

32:49KT: Yeah. Fair. Um, I loved, again, I love the opening scene of this film because, you know, it's a fucked up stuffy. Upper society when they criminalize people through going through the trash. Really? I was like, you, I, I was like, you've got me. I'm like, this is mine. This is my anime. I'm the anime now.

33:17KT: Yeah, I know. And that's why I loved it. Right.

33:21Oti: Yeah. It speaks on a lot of things and I think once we get to see Rudo. Navigate this world and understand a bit more of who he is, then we can start addressing the elephant in the room. Because currently it's sort of, we got into it and then we are like, okay, okay, we'll cover it later. Let's just put it there. But it's still in the background. It's like the, it's like the, you know, the shadow that's just casting wide and far. We know it's there and I'm here for it.

33:56KT: Yeah. No, I absolutely agree. And I guess if we go back to, um, your theory about protagonists that go through struggle, like Rudo is also one of them as well, because Regto. Yeah. Like his father figure in his life, like, but I don't think that's necessarily c cliche, like I think it very much. It colors his context of why he's so driven.

34:22Oti: Mm-hmm.

34:22KT: Right. And we are a few episodes in Friends and Lovers. Maybe this is tantalizing. Hopefully you are Tantalized and you'll go and check out the series, so I won't spoil it, but as the episodes go on, I wouldn't say we understand more, but we are getting more information about what his ability could potentially be.

34:41Oti: Mm.

34:42KT: Right. They talk about, I think they're called Vital Instruments.

34:45Oti: Yeah,

34:46KT: so, so we've got vital instruments in this world and it's essentially where you pour all of your energy into that you nurture, right? And you know, we see particular characters with particular instruments. I don't want to spoil any of it actually, 'cause I feel like you should go and watch it. But all of it is reinforced by the heartbeat of. Like this shit's gotta mean something at the end of the day. And you can't just, even though as you say, there's value in trash, you can't treat people like they're, you can discard them. Mm-hmm.

35:19KT: What are you most excited for in this series?

35:23Oti: Um, just getting to know the characters a bit more. Um,

35:29KT: I love Grace.

35:30Oti: We are yet to get to see the captain as well. Um, so there's a lot of stuff going on. I've not read the manga, I don't think I want to yet.

35:40KT: Or KT's anime corner.

35:42KT: One of the guys at work, I told him, we started watching this and he's read the Manga and there's like over 150 volume. Based off of my rec. And another guy at work, he started watching this and he is like, what? That's how guys sound to me, by the way. Even you, Oti. Oh wow. There's only fab. Um, so there you go. On the strength of my recommendation, friends and lovers. Um. But yeah, I, I'm very excited to see where this series goes. Um, you know, he, he keeps trying to spoil the manga for me, and I'm like, please. Please don't. Um, but I'm very excited to see where it goes. Shout out to my MVP of the show. So far, Riyo, I love her vital instrument and I love the way she does it so well. Oh, I, I haven't gotten so horny over an action scene in so long and that's saying something 'cause we just did back to back. JJKA.

I didn't think, I was wondering whether they'll take Alien that I was like, what more can you do to this franchise that is just outside of, oh, maybe it'll be like Falling Skies where there was like an invasion or they'll get their children, but nah man, they went, they introduced some stuff and I thought like it just worked so well. Give it to a Fargo man. He knows his stuff and I'm here for it. It feels like it's gonna be really, really, really, really good. We've gotta get some really nice storytelling. We've gotta get some character development. Gotta get some amazing world building and, yeah.
