KT: It's another week in the For Your Reference household and another energized addition, it's Power or August 30 mm-hmm where we will catch you up on all of the offerings in the multifaceted Power universe. They say this is a big rich world.
Oti: big
KT: Joe, not Trey Songz. Let's get on with the show. Hey friends, and some loyal brothers. Non-law brother lovers. Welcome back to the For Your Reference podcast. You got your host, KT hop in the Mustang. Play the mix tape. As we travel through the nineties and Chicago, right. To cancel Christmas on your. Get energized with Raising Kanan and Force, or if you're in black Twitter, Tommy this week.
Oti: Woohoo.
KT: Woohoo. Welcome. Welcome friends and lovers. Uh, if you are super nasty and you've found us here, go and check out our two plus hours. Yo yo yo shout outs to Colby covering the first five seasons in the. Part of season six of Power. Um, and more recently in your timeline, we covered Power season six, as well as Ghost season one and two. Oh oh, oh, oh,
KT: I'm achieving toxic masculinity. I'm not sure if that's what this HP is for or this XP, but it's absolutely why I'm here. Let's get into general status of information. There's obviously a lot that we need to cover the most pressing on my agenda. Items is 50 Cent posting about Raising Kanan and BMF, but blurring out P-Valley. Petty, but very on brand, but let's get into general stats and information. I'll be covering the information of both TV shows. We have season one of Raising Kanan season two is currently airing at the moment, but we will keep it insular. If you're nasty. If you're feeling all of the penmanship in regards to creator.
KT: Sascha Penn released in July of 2021. We're talking about the stars of I all in regards to the actual stars, Mekai Curtis, Patina Miller, Hailey Kilgore, uh, London Brown. I just was able to separate Omari Hardwick from Ghost. So I'm still trying to separate London Brown from Marvin. I have a lot of thing. I have a lot of things. Speaking of referencing legitimate, toxic masculinity, um, but beautiful, lovely, always Malcolm Mays, Joey Bada$$, but all of the bad asses that keeps all of the eyes on the Neo long thighs O ma.
KT: We can really just stop there, but let's continue. Let's keep going. Let's talk about Force slash Tommy. They really could have just kept it aside from the fact that they called it Ghost. They've called it Raising Kanan. Uh, they could have just called it canceling Tommy Christmas on your ass. Robert Munic, uh, curated, uh, into season one. I don't know how much behind the scenes we're going to get, but Gary Lennon slated to be the showrun for season two.
KT: The first season of Force or Tommy was released in February of 2022 eternal flame, always in forever. Universal intergalactic, treasure, Joseph Sikora, Anthony Fleming III, Shane Harper, Lucien Cambric, Isaac Keys. Oh, we should have known he was a jazz musician, Oti, those, those dot tones. Mm-hmm like, I don't know why they got Regé-Jean Page to do that. Uh, meditation app. I, I, I, I do, I am partial to a Regé-Jean Page. I know why I talk about him and also about him being Chicken George, but these chil need to know Oti.
Oti: Yeah, I know. We've got a poster of him,
KT: And also a poster of Tommy Flanagan, I guess, while we're at it, king Dublin, check out our Kin episode, friends and lovers for Aidan Gillen alone. Maybe not, maybe not necessarily his character. Obviously his performance will always be quality. Um, but go and check out our Kin episode. And if you're Oti, Daredevil nasty, Charlie Cox. All right. Well, we have a lot that we're going to cover, but I guess before we do that, we've covered, you know, season six of Power. We've covered the first two seasons of Ghost. How are you generally feeling about our Power August dot.
Oti: Oh, I'm loving it, loving it. The LA though, you have to shout out Courtney Kemp for building such a Ugh, amazing universe is, is just everything.
KT: Mm, wow. And you know, like Power in so many facet in so many morsels, call them books, call them Bibles, call them gospels in any case where we'll be at Courtney A. Kemp, um, and maybe even 50 Cent's PMPs. Alter, um, you know, it's been so embedded, you know, even in the past couple of years, um, in our household and we were just so used to having it and we're like, we talk so much about loving and lording.
KT: Not, not just, you know, different stories that haven't been on screen, but quality penmanship. And this is absolutely why we're covering, uh, a whole Power August in two weeks.
Oti: oh, for sure.
KT: Okay, well, we're going to talk about both shows. Uh, let's let's talk generally about Raising Kanan, you know, we kind of talked about it, um, you know, in our Power Ghost sort of conversation Raising Kanan.
KT: Um, I guess I'll go first on my first impressions. It definitely had a harder task or a taller order to meet, you know, um, it, it didn't necessarily have a, a spinoff sort of effect in a world of reboots in a world of remakes, in a world of sequels, prequels, and all of that nasty nonsense. Um, this show definitely had a lot to prove, um, and it definitely.
KT: It didn't have the leveraging. Cause even if we talk about Force for a second, you know, Tommy is really the fan favorite, maybe not in Oti's, Ghost, toxic households, but Tommy really is a fan favorite of the Power universe. So I think it was quite guaranteed that we were going to have a Force. We are still mourning the fact that potentially we're never going to get a Tate season.
KT: So, you know, You have something very special and, you know, shoutouts to Sascha, as well as a team that were involved in Raising Kanan because even ton, it's a lot different. You don't have the high octane sort of action, you know, the salaciousness and frivol that you can expect from Tommy feeding off of Ghost, or rather cleaning up the messes of Ghost, you know?
KT: So there, there was a. Of character building and even just general world building. Um, and we're also talking about a different point in time. We're talking about the nineties and, you know, the, the aesthetic that also comes with that. And also the cinematography, it, it is absolutely, you know, in the streets of the Power universe, but it definitely has its own colder sack, Randy south park or otherwise.
Oti: yeah. A hundred percent. I think I was very pessimistic. I, I didn't see how this would work because a I hated Kanan. I think
KT: and, and will definitely come to, you know, the Kanan that we are first introduced to. Absolutely.
Oti: Yeah. And, and I really didn't see how it would work as a show on its own. But I think the pilot just set the groundwork and gave us a lot, I think just watching Raq, do her thing. Oh, Patina Miller.
KT: Oh yes,
Oti: Mm. Mm. But wow. I think, but
KT: Patina, Patina.
Oti: exactly.
KT: you're welcome.
Oti: I think just seeing how everything gels and how Kanan was a kid, you know, you kind of remove these people or these characters that, you know, they're probably born like that they are
KT: Yeah It's kind of like, you know, um, Lana kind of makes a comment in Archer about thinking of Archer is just a smaller version, not an actual child. Exactly. but, but you're absolutely right. Um, and you know, that's, that's definitely, you know, the, one of the themes that we're going to get into when we start talking about Raising Kanan, but there's, there's so much to applaud, you know, About this show and there's so much that feels, you know, so individual and I, I don't know, um, you know, friends and lovers, this is a safe space.
KT: So we will admit that we have tried BMF.
Oti: we,
KT: Um, it, it didn't necessarily latch onto us not to say that we've given up on it. Um, F. 50 Cent feel free to book out the first couple of rows for the For Your Reference concert if you want. Um, but yeah, we have tried BMF. We didn't necessarily latch onto it, but, um, before we talk into our themes, you know, with Oti in particular, especially if you've recently list.
KT: Into our Air Force One episode or literally any that even has just the periphery of a black person in the background of a film or a TV show. We talk about black tax. Um, you know, we've got Issa Rae tax by default. If Issa Rae does anything, we are absolutely going to check it out. And I, I guess while we are here, make sure you're watching Rap Sh!t, friends and lovers, cuz we'll absolutely.
KT: Covering it. Um, but would you say that there was enough Power tax or you were still folding your arms and being grumpy? Not sure whether you were going to enjoy Raising Kanan
Oti: Uh, to be honest, I went with very little tax just because Kanan as a character, didn't hold that much weight or gravitas with
KT: Wow I didn't know. You hated him
Oti: Yeah, I fucking, he just rubbed it the wrong way. You know, I was team Ghost the whole way through.
KT: okay. Yeah. Sorry. How could I forget? That's shame on me.
Oti: No, he just, he just acted a fool with Tariq and I didn't get that. So seeing, coming into Raising Kanan and wanting to understand his character and how he became to be such a hard. Seasoned criminal. Yeah. That Ghost is like bra. You need to stay away.
KT: Like even Ghost was like Ghost was very ruthless. I, I, I wouldn't maybe I'll need to do another rewatch of Power, but season one Ghost, he left no loose end at
Oti: Mm.
KT: Even if you looked at him funny, he would get rid of you. Yeah. Do you remember, um, where his watch got stolen? That was a very, like, that was kind of a reminder of how ruthless Ghost was as a particular character, but yeah, there was no messing with Ghost and even Ghost was scared of Kanan.
Oti: Yeah. Just to put things in perspective.
KT: And I think, you know, if I can reference Kin again, I, I won't mention any sort of characters, but no matter how much of a tough ass someone is just realize that that tough ass also has a boss. mm-hmm right. Um, and I guess you kind of see that sort of dynamic, um, between Ghost and Kanan as well. Interesting, interesting. But I'm glad we are where we are today and you absolutely love, and splush all of the tasty sort of morsels that Raising Kanan brings. Let's go into the themes. I do wanna, um, carry into the same themes that we were covering for Power, as well as Ghost, um, wherever they are relevant.
KT: Let's talk about. See, so you've you talked about Kanan and he very much was a hardened criminal. Like there, there was no, there was no giggle giggling at a, a cat and a dog, um, video on YouTube. Like Kanan there, there was no hope for him, right. There was, there was no sort of levity aside from the sort of dynamic that he had with Tariq. And I guess, um, while we're here, spoiler, spoiler spoil. Son killer son killer son killer.
Oti: Shawn never had a chance.
KT: Shawn. Well, actually, cause we are talking about Kanan. We are talking about unfortunately, a stunted, um, sort of legacy. Let's explore that a little bit because Shawn was his blood son, even though Tariq kind of became his proxy son. What are your thoughts on
Oti: that? No, biologically, yes, but everything else, he just in connect with Kanan Shawn was soft. He was the, he was the opposite of everything Kanan was and everything Kanan felt that was valuable to him.
KT: Okay. But if he wasn't Tasha's play thing, what would you say?
Oti: Same.
KT: Okay. Okay.
Oti: We, we, we, we see that cadence is something that is completely missing in Shawn.
KT: Yeah, just, just, just the, the affinity and the ability to be in the. Okay.
Oti: Shawn looked like a lock. Shawn looked like Zeke. Shawn was
KT: I still haven't recovered from the last recording. Oti
Oti: Shawn is, is, is Power Zeke. You know, just, everything just felt weird and wrong with him. You know, he, he was around the game, but he never really got it.
KT: Well, Kanan wasn't there. He wasn't a presence for Shawn.
Oti: Neither was, was Ghost or Ghost. Wasn't really about Tariq doing the life.
KT: Wake up, Lou,
Oti: about Kendrick you right now.
KT: Wow. Really?
Oti: Mm-hmm
KT: friends and lovers, I guess, while we're at this juncture, go and check out our open source, hip hop, the black and brown dialogue, um, because Oti definitely didn't pull out the Kendrick Lamar card. The J. Cole card is probably coming out later in this episode. Wow. It's interesting to know the, the, the Kanan that was introduced to us. And, you know, we've mentioned it a couple of times, but it was so heartwarming and it makes absolute sense that in essence, and perhaps in innocence, there was a baby Kanan.
Oti: mm,
KT: A baby Kanan that leaned on his mom. And, and unfortunately as time grew on, felt the need to protect his mom mm-hmm to his own detriment, to his own future. And, you know, it was covered very well in the first couple of episodes of season one about not just that he's a good kid, but that he potentially had a promising future outside of the streets.
Oti: Yeah, good kid, m.A.A.d city, you know, it's, it's,
KT: It's one of those things. Wow. Yeah. You To Pimp a OIE Butterfly. Am I right?
Oti: yeah.
KT: Are you gonna start wearing thorns and, and then bleed on a stage?
Oti: Jesus recounted prof.
KT: are you, are you experiencing, uh, Reservation Dogs, go and check out Reservation Dogs. Are you experiencing your man moon?
Oti: yeah, I, I, I get mine, um, quarterly, so it's all good
KT: Friends and lovers, if you're bleeding from your refi, you really need to go and consult some medical help, not a fucking film podcast.
Oti: yeah. Cause we see his surrounding. We know his friends, uh, some of his buddies are about their life, but he's. He's studious. Um, we can see that even Symphony can see some potential in Kanan.
Oti: Yeah, but the, the life pulls him, you know, he's, he's wanting to protect Raq at all costs. Mm-hmm feeling that he has to be that person. And up until the very end, we see that Raq Raq has the Monet. Yeah. Where a lot of these issues that are being faced are out of our own doing. Yeah. And to the point where he gets or he gets Kanan to do at the end of season one. There's no coming back from that
KT: ship Yeah, there isn't no, there abso absolutely isn't and again, this is, uh, more love and spacious to the penmanship, um, of in, in Kanan's particular, um, his story arc, because there were a couple of instances where. I would say a lot of it was at the hands of Marvin
KT: There were a lot of instances and opportunities for Kanan to really step up. And again, a lot of it had to do with Marvin. Um, but it really led to a crescendo at the end of season one, you know, where I, you know, um, I guess Matthew Gray Gubler, Criminal Minds. I don't, I don't reference it a lot, but I was absolutely on Criminal Minds forums.
KT: Don't worry about it, friends and lovers. Um, but you could say love is a science, right? Um, before a lot of it love, really is a phenomenon of the human experience that can never really be fully explained or comprehended. Right. So I. You know, depending on which camp you're in, maybe you would say that Raq didn't love Kanan, but I really feel like she does in, in her own way. I feel like Raq really loves Kanan, but it also doesn't, um, shield him from the danger of the streets.
Oti: no Raq Raq. I don't think there's, there's a doubt that Raq loved Kanan, and it's just that Raq is also a product of upbringing and our city and being the
KT: There's the J. Cole. There you are. Oti.
Oti: So
KT: Nas is coming out soon, right? I, I I'm, I'm feeling, I'm feeling your Mount Rushmore of rappers coming out in this episode.
Oti: Everything the Raq does. There's that affinity to all, you know, this is how I've always been done. And I'm sure probably half pirate did the same shit or whoever got into the game, got her to do some weird, really crazy shit. Mm-hmm so shit rolls downhill and it all affects them and Raq, despite a better judgments.
Oti: He. Kanan she can see Kanan wasn't about our life. And for the longest time, she tried to protect him until Kanan started acting a fool. And he was like, you know what, if I don't protect Kanan or try and get him under my fucking wing, he's just gonna get worse. Or he is gonna get up being shot in the street somewhere without any sort of protection. So this was one of the ways in which Raq misguided, as it was, try to, you know, make Kanan be about that.
KT: See, you know, I knew we were going to have rappers embodied through Oti. I didn't realize we were going to get Furious Styles from Boyz n the Hood. Wow.
Oti: Wow.
KT: you know, do you think Raq was trying to teach Raising Kanan how to be a young man
Oti: Kanan thinks DEFCON is his dad, you know?
Oti: Yeah. DEFCON run the streets. He feels like there's that legacy needs to be that. Yeah. You know, if he knew all my ESOS, the. dad
Oti: He'd be looking for those near long ties everywhere. Forget the fucking game.
KT: you know, uh, friends and lovers. Recording for our podcast is a magical thing, especially when you have a delicious man like Oti, because you just never know where the fuck his chocolate factory is going to take you. Wow. Oti. Are you proud of yourself?
Oti: Yeah. Would you be about that game if he knew Howard was your, was your dad Howard,
KT: do you mean, would I need to have a hardened exterior? If I knew there was love at home?
Oti: Yeah. Feeling like, oh, I have to be hard in DEFCON. I can't let that legacy.
KT: Yeah, no, I agree. I agree. Um, there, there are definitely some life lessons that Kanan probably didn't need to learn. Um, you know, in, in the most futile of ways. I absolutely agree with you. Um, but up until. Up until the end of season one, that's where we're operating from. So as far as he's concerned, he was just sneaking it up, out in the streets.
Oti: Mm-hmm
KT: oh man. The, the weight of legacy. Hey.
Oti: Yeah
KT: Like a crown of thorns. One might say,
Oti: Mm-hmm,
KT: let's move into brotherhood as well as friendship. I think, um, you know, non-gendered brotherhood, you know, the, his, his sort of compadre like his, you know, go to confidant is
Oti: mm-hmm
KT: mm-hmm and I guess this also follows on from legacy as well, because there's a couple of, um, you know, scenes from the future that I want to talk about because knowing now how vulnerable even Jukebox was like, I, I think, I think it's more believable for me as unbelievable as it was for Kanan to have been a kid and want to experience, you know, navigating the.
KT: At that age, that's more believable to me than the Jukebox we meet and how fucking hard. And she was, um, to even think that she had a soft and fluffy side to her.
Oti: I think the craziest thing is Jbox as it currently stands in season one is harder than Kanan. yeah. Oh,
Oti: so
KT: I, I think it's also, you know, it, it might be that it's in her nature, but I think it's also between the two of them. Jukebox has no choice, but to be
Oti: Marvin, is your dad?
KT: What, what the fuck? but she's, they're also set up differently because Marvin is a fucking idiot. Jukebox kind of has to hustle for her own coin. Like, you know, there's no bags coming from Marvin. He's a fucking idiot. I, we we'll talk about Marvin, but there's obviously so much quality.
KT: Um, but you know, Jukebox definitely had to look out for herself and there's so many instances where. You know, like she, she doesn't even know her real mother, like there's so much pain that she's going through, but she needs to leave it to the side because you know, as much as she might wanna cry out for help, there's no one there that's heeding her call. Mm-hmm one of the most beautiful things about Raising Kanan is seeing, you know, the kinship between Kanan and Jukebox.
Oti: True. I think just seeing that Kanan can be fully open with it. That's wonderful to see.
KT: And, and Jbox as well, you know, and Kanan the fact that Kanan knows that Jbox is of the L G B T I Q plus persuasion, but where is the hedge
Oti: And still, you know, it, it's one of those things, you know, back in the nineties or whatever, you could tell that Marvin feels away or at least he can sense.
KT: Oti. I was having a good time. Do we really need to talk about the homophobia in the room?
Oti: no, no, but it I'm just, no, I'm just trying to show that, you know, Kanan is there for Jukebox, regardless. It goes unsaid, but he's there. He understands it. Um, It was just good to see Jbox being able to be herself around. Um, Kanan
KT: No, I absolutely agree. Um, we don't need to take up a lot of air time, um, in this particular recording. Um, but I will say Marvin is in the same shelf with your Trevor Noah, like any sort of phob bigness. I , yeah. You not my DMs friends and lovers. I got a lot of time.
KT: Oh man, but yeah, it's, I am so excited. Um, I, I personally don't know how many seasons or how many books or how many chapters we're going to get of Raising Kanan specifically, but I just wanna see Kanan and Juke grow up together. you know, there there's a lot of theorizing and you can keep your Ghost theories, um, of, you know, is Ghost gonna show up in Raising Kanan as well as Tommy, but you know, they're quite a few years younger than Kanan and we've already, we've already got Power.
KT: You know what I mean? So, um, you know, while people are trying to check for Ghost in Raising Kanan, I just wanna see Kanan and Juke continue to navigate the world together. Um, education is doesn't necessarily apply here. Um, aside from the fact that education was never going to be an option for Kanan, whether DEFCON was the dad, whether Howard is the dad, um, you know, Raq is his mom and she would always want him there.
KT: And. You know, it's going to get interesting. It's going to get interesting. And, um, it'll be interesting to cover season two, um, when it finishes as well, the, the last sort of theme, and then we'll talk about general characters before we move on to Force. Um, the last general sort of theme that we have is kingpins. So the kingpins in Raising Kanan, uh, would be Raq as well as Unique. What do you think about the dynamics in season one?
Oti: I appreciated what Unique brought to the table.
KT: Yes.
Oti: He knows who he is
KT: Oh, were they're adverse Harry.
Oti: Exactly. He's got Avon vibes. He, he knows the game. He, he is comfortable in leading the, you know, he doesn't try. He's not trying to change anything.
KT: It's interesting. You say Avon and not Marlo.
Oti: Oh, Marlo, Marlo look, models are different beast.
KT: Maybe in season two. He'll turn into a Marlo who knows?
Oti: Mm. Mm. But you know, he, he, he was happy to just be there. You know, you could see that he's ruthless as fuck. His soldiers will scared the shit out of him. Um, but still, you know, you appreciate that
Oti: that. He could be reasoned to, and I think that's why
Oti: he listened, you know, he wasn't about, oh, because Raq is gonna say this. I'm not gonna, you know, listen, if it makes sense.
KT: Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, but that, that's, that's how you make smart decisions and you're absolutely right. And that's you, you are right on the money. Um, you know, referencing Avon as opposed to Marlo. Yeah.
Oti: Yeah. Marlo won. Listened to shit. No one, man.
KT: No, absolutely not. Um, shoutouts to our DeAngelo who plays Dean, um, in here as well, cuz he is kind of, you know, in the mix as well. And it's so interesting to see the dynamics and you know, , if you're trying to start a co-op.
Oti: tap, tap, tap
KT: on that ass.
Oti: I don't think that's all I don't think that's the reference spot. Okay.
KT: it is my pu valley.
Oti: well,
KT: Uh, well, 50 Cent can try and blur me out, but my SPLU is, are Unix, pixelated, Oti.
Oti: mm-hmm
KT: Um, but yeah, Unique definitely offers something interesting because you know, you, you don't want an adversary that is too strong or that is too weak. Like you really go toe to toe
Oti: for sure.
KT: Uh, let's go through some characters, Raq
Oti: love, love Raq. She is carrying a fuck. She wants to run the city. If, if you gotta compare her, she is, she is, uh, a more intelligent Stringer. Um, okay.
KT: OK. I thought you were coming for Monet, but I'll be just fine.
Oti: Nah, uh, one is that level yet?
KT: You know what, like by all accounts, I respect that. And maybe it is the hypocrisy that we have in this world, but her attitude towards the streets and towards the game was also how she navigated her love life in her personal life. And it just didn't work.
Oti: Poor Symphony
KT: poor Symphony. Absolutely. The poor guy. What was he like an architect or
Oti: Yeah You don't know what you gotta get with Raq bloody.
KT: But it's like, but that you're, it's exactly what you're saying. Like even in the game, there was like, it was very hard for her to, you know, come to the table and talk to Unique to be fair. It was Lou-Lou that, you know, was convincing Raq to do that. He's actually kind of the voice of reason.
Oti: Yeah. Well, yeah, you can see Lou-Lou trying pull, pull, pull away. He he's, he is diet he's jaded by all of it.
KT: Well, yeah, right dude, he got lit up. Like, of course he's cheated
Oti: He got lit up and he killed some kids, you know? Um, there's no amount of blood jobs. You can get these kids to make it, you know, to ease your mind after killing them.
KT: It just doesn't work. wow. For four quarters and two dimes Oti. Mm-hmm . Yeah. Like those things just stay with you and, you know, uh, you know, friends and lovers go and check out Snowfall. I, I believe they are currently filming for their final season. Um, I won't particularly spoil a character, but yeah, when. Characters that like, you know, have to take out kids. It it's just a point of no return for those particular
Oti: particular Yeah. It's really interesting to see him wanting to do his music. Uh, and his, he, he feels like he's good at it,
KT: but do you think that's what I was gonna say? Do you think he has an ear for it?
Oti: Yeah, I hope so. I hope so. I hope he surrounds himself with good people.
KT: Well, he, he already failed that test with Jessica.
Oti: Uh, I don't know if you she's just ambitious. She wants Famous to, to, you know, to succeed
KT: I watched the Notorious movie. I know what happens in the studio booth was it all a dream mate?
Oti: Uh, not that bit.
KT: I don't know. She just, she feels very opportunistic. She's got the residue of a lay away home. Like she's just, she she's ready. She's got her overnight bag. She's ready to go.
Oti: Serious and ski.
KT: put his face in your ass, like a feed.
Oti: Yeah. If, if, if you're not gonna do that, you know, get your money the way you can. No, one's gonna fucking hold you to shit.
KT: You know, Lou-Lou's gotta find someone else. It wasn't gonna. Hey, Hey, what team Lou-Lou in this
Oti: happened, we're team Lou-Lou, but sometimes you gotta stare the facts and know what's gonna happen. You know, if, if Famous doesn't make it or she doesn't push Lou-Lou far enough to get favors into the booth to record something, you know, she is sort of failed there.
KT: I, you know, um, being a non-American and a non originator of hip hop, there, there is a, there's a quality to Famous voice that sounds reminiscent of Tupac.
Oti: wow.
KT: You're just gonna, let me hang out in the distance there.
Oti: yeah. I'm not gonna attach that. Um, but you know, he did give us Streets Need a Body. It's a banger. We've listened to it multiple times.
KT: I think, um, in, in pop culture, um, I think it, it it's really up there if not the top, um, sort of songs that reference a crime. Like happening.
KT: Um, you know, another favorite, even though I'm not talking about phobic, Dave Chappelle, there's that Tupac scene, um, of him like Tupac, like hinting that he's still alive. Hey you in the blue shirt over there. why you dancing all. We If, if we, if we were to create a list of like great rap songs in the ether, um, that reference real life events, I think I'm not really that Um, but yeah, I don't know. Maybe Famous is just inspired by true events. Maybe he needs to witness another murder to give us another banger. well, we, we haven't really talked about Marvin. I've kind of just been yelling and shaking my fists at the sky, but, um, I, I guess, give us your toxic review of a toxic Marvin.
Oti: He's the first born.
KT: He feels like he's old, Oh, so he is the first pancake, like Connor from
Oti: He feels entitled. He feels like he needs to lead. Everyone should listen to him just because he's the first born. Well, he had that chance and he fucking blew it. And that's why Raq is there.
KT: Yeah.
Oti: So, whatever residue he has or feelings of resentment, he needs to fucking shove that shit down.
KT: Yeah. Otherwise what's the fucking point. Well, he projects a lot. Like he projects a lot, but it's like, you squandered your opportunity fam like no one, no one got in your way. You got in your own way.
Oti: Yeah. Take a box seat.
KT: It kind of makes you, it kind of gives you more confidence and it makes you think, oh, maybe Kanan can run the ti hardest. Like maybe Kanan can maybe, yeah. He's a bit levelheaded. He can do it.
Oti: Yeah. He makes Kanan look like something else.
KT: I just wanna make it clear that I don't think there's anything that Marvin can do for me. And I know this is a TV show, but fuck it. Right. But for me to forgive the way that he treated Jukebox and I, I don't think I'll ever come to any sort of happy giggle gaggles with Marvin. Every time I see him, he makes me physically ill.
Oti: Wow.
KT: That's what it means to be an ally Oti,
Oti: all alls up and up uh, but it, it is, it is interesting to see the dynamic between Marvin and Lou-Lou. You could tell there's a rift there and it's building, so it's gonna be exciting to see what, what that happens or what that transpires to in season two.
KT: They're, literally, you know, the oppositions on Raq shoulders, right? Mm-hmm or Pinky and the Brain, if you are pardon the reference, like they're complete opposites. Um, but then again, if, if Lou-Lou is leading with his head, what the fuck is Marvin leading with his Dick? Yeah. Cause we found him knee deep in, in, uh, informant pussy. we're working on our merch, friends and lovers. Don't worry about it.
Oti: Yeah, but he just doesn't give a shit. Uh, I think he is been through all that. You can tell that Lou-Lou cares a bit too much sometimes.
KT: Okay. Well, second, second, second, second. Cause he does care and he does love them and we fucking love Lou-Lou, but why is he not giving Juke studio time? right? Yeah, no, genuinely I don't understand
Oti: no idea.
KT: I don't get it either. Well, there was some studio time that they got when they're doing Streets Need, Streets Need a Body, but I, I, outside of that, we've not seen ju Jukebox in there at all, but like that should've proved her must
Oti: mm-hmm
KT: um, speaking of proving their must, let's talk about Scrappy. I just wanna lay out my love and, um, also respect because he literally took one bracket's eye for the team.
Oti: Ha he did, you can tell that his loyal in, after taking such a beating and is still went back, we didn't falter it's it's it's good to have such a loyal, um, soldier.
KT: Yeah, absolutely. Um, is there anything else you wanna say about wow. Shout outs to IMDB Symphony Bosket he really didn't have a chance. Did he
Oti: yeah. I think Raq is just too far gone for, to give him what he wants.
KT: Raq. Can't but I, I don't even think it's about, you know, her having to give up something for him to have something it's just a fucking relationship.
Oti: Exactly. Raq can't. Give that to him, that relationship that he wants. Stability Raq. Can't give
KT: base level, like it's the base startup pack for any relationship. It's not something special. He's not asking for the Symphony special.
Oti: Yeah. And he knows Raq is in the game and he's not even asking for much. He's like, yeah, just sometimes man, but Raq has drawn so many lines of what anything to do with Kanan. She's like, not don't even speak, get my son's name, you know, that level of, yeah.
KT: You can't even cross that. Okay. But even that aside, she wasn't allowing herself to be vulnerable with Symphony either.
Oti: But
KT: it was just, it was convenient and easy for her to say it's cause of Kanan.
Oti: Yeah. But I think towards the, towards the end of the season, it was really good to see sort of how all three of them just hang out and yeah, it was good to see.
KT: It was furthering my theory of hot people should just bang other hot people. There were some lovely sex scenes in season one.
Oti: Oh yeah. Marvin.
KT: No, thank you. Um, also, I don't know if Juke is supposed to be the Canary in the Jukebox, but every time, every time her beautiful voice started singing, a body would drop. Like now it's now it's that trepidation every time you Juke singing. Um, and you know, obviously she went through her own storyline as well. Um, you know, I was just defending her against Marvin, but there's, there's so much depth there and you know, between her and Kanan, you know, unfortunately she she's found a way for lack of better word to self soothe.
Oti: It was really sad to see her lose. Um, Nicole, because you could see that they started building something special and for her to die, the fact that she took a drug, a hot shot from Jukebox bag without even her knowing.
KT: Yeah, that was wild and Jukebox to not even be as angry worth Kanan after all that, because she understands, like you said, Furious Styles, Oti.
Oti: yeah. And
KT: the circumstance. Mm-hmm , it's not the behavior. It's the circumstance. Yeah. And it's also systemic if we wanna talk Um, but yeah, it's, it was just sad because, you know, if I can embody Joe from Romeo Must Die. You know, Nicole was Jukebox's rose in a concrete world. Mm-hmm are you, are you a man of the persuasion of the culture? Are you aware of the hip hops?
Oti: Pippy? DOPs
KT: Oh, but it's just, and then whenever I listen to the deal, I just think about them and you know, that beautiful tape that they created together. And I'm closing my eyes now and I'm thinking about the tape and it, it was so emotional because, you know, I, I think, and by all. Time and time again, Juke has proved that she's always ready for the hard times, but what she wasn't ready for was to have genuine moments of unbridled love mm-hmm. And she had that tape to keep with her until Marvin fucking came along.
Oti: yeah. Sad, sad, sad,
KT: Sad sad. Sad. But, um, let, let's finish it off on a light note. Uh, what are your, what are your general sort of wrap-ups what are you hoping to see in season two?
Oti: see? I want to see Kanan go up again. Um, I want to see how a lot
KT: sort, so you want him to break bad completely,
Oti: At least for a bit. Okay. Just, just to show us, you know, a different layer, a different sort of Kanan, we've seen the soft Kanan. We've seen him struggle with everything. We've seen him fuck up a lot of shit. I want him to take more responsibility in season two for everything that he's done before. I want him to know who his real father is.
KT: Okay. Okay. But, but before you talk about Howard, you don't, you don't necessarily think there'll be a natural, like rubber band or even your maybe canceled B, B headband, like a, a push and pull like a snap back.
Oti: No, I don't think so. I think he'll be once he,
KT: cause we know he's going to be the Kanan that we see in Power. So you don't think there, there might be a chance of him, you know, demonstrating different qualities or you think we're we're on this path and we are heading
Oti: we're on this path. And I think once it happens, I think there's no looking back.
KT: Okay. Jukebox is almost there. Yeah.
Oti: I think it'll take very little to get Jukebox across the line.
KT: Like, I, I, I would be, I would not be surprised if Jukebox didn't have another love interest ever again, me too. Like, there'll be fuckings, but I don't
Oti: not anyone who will have, you know, Nicole had a big spot.
KT: Yeah, but even then, you know, Jukebox wasn't necessarily sure about whether she deserve love friends and lovers, you know, receiving love or being given love is not the same as allowing it in your heart chambers, but that is a, you know, That is a masterclass for another day. Um, but okay. Let's, let's go back to Kanan. So I feel like, yeah, they, they can't drag this shit out. We need to find out his daddy or Kanan rather needs to find out who his daddy
Oti: Mm-hmm
KT: any predictions for Lou-Lou and his record business.
Oti: I think they all gotta die. Uh, I don't think
KT: Whoa. Hey. Wow. In season.
Oti: Uh, I don't know how they're going to do this, but I feel like one of them is gonna die. Be Lou-Lou or Marvin
KT: by Marvin.
Oti: I'm pretty sure it's gonna be Lou-Lou just because he wants out. I feel like that would draw Raq the wrong way and Raq will do something to Lou-Lou.
KT: Yeah. She, she doesn't make the best decisions. We've talked about Power of the POM go, uh, listen to our previous one where we were talking about Monet. Um, and Monet definitely has a sweetie type. Oh, Woohoo. Thank you, friends and lovers for joining us another week in the For Your Reference household, uh, ho as the crypto bros say, um, for our fourth episode, uh, usually we finish off in a segment.
