KT: Skol friends and lovers and welcome to Ref Plus July and August the exclusive patron show for you, not just you, but you. How are you feeling Oti? I'm good. Good. Right. It's been a wild, wild, wild, I think since June podcast related, it's been a wild couple of months.

Oti: It has been a wild couple of months. A lot of things have happened in our personal life as well as you know, podcast life, so it's, it's been quite interesting.

KT: It has. We are going to put this up on YouTube and we'll also chuck up the audio and I guess to also ensure that we do deliver it during this YouTube video, we're just going to roll with the punches so I guess we'll see, maybe, maybe you'll see the real Oti and the real KT,

Oti: you've been saying the real audio all this time.

KT: Welcome. Welcome. Welcome friends and lovers. Let's start off with the roll call. Ben Brandy, Brent, Elaine, Emily, Griff, Jamie, Julio, Jules, and Rob Colby, Paul, and Sam T. Who, who in July we covered, so this is how long it's been since we've done a Ref Plus, Oti, in July Umbrella Academy season three, Soul Food, The Boys, The Black Phone in August, the 1st of August was our Jordan Peele interview. Wow. Fuck me. Wow. King Kong. Nope. And our Power August that we literally fit into two weeks, Power and Ghost, Raising Kanan, Force. Idris. Are you ready to get into the polls? Yeah. Okay. Again, we're doing July and August. So it's been a while since we've watched all of them. Spiderhead. This is Chris Hemsworth trying to be some sexy scientist.

KT: All right,

Oti: it's also the island

KT: and it's also you know, when we did our Google searches, cause we wanted to look for films like Cube, this would also come up in the results as well. Oh, shit. That's been a while. What did you think about it?

Oti: Oh, the ending was predictable which was fine. I didn't hate the movie. I, I went to it, I don't know, like seeing Chris Hemsworth outside of Marvel shit. Yeah. Just, I felt like he's boring.

KT: Yeah. Can we say that? Is this a safe space? You're Australian.

Oti: You should be Aussie proud.

KT: Yeah. But white Tandiwe. Unless there's some genealogy I don't know about.

Oti: No, the movie was enjoyable. I think, well, not enjoyable, but it was fine. It was fine for a Sunday afternoon. And I think my thing now is. I classify movies by, by by time of, of day or week that I feel like this would be the most appropriate time to watch. So Sunday afternoon where you just bumfuck tired, you're not looking for Monday and you're like, Sunday, you don't have anything to do. There's no football. There's no any kind of sports that interests you put Spiderhead. Yeah. It'll suffice.

KT: It got the job done and we love Jurnee Smollett.

Oti: We do. We do.

KT: Yeah. I don't have anything really to offer in regards to that. I just think, yeah, you're right. It was a bit cliche. And then it's Miles Teller, isn't it? You know, having him be conflicted and I don't know. It was all a bit of a wash really, like for me, those sorts of films, the benchmark is Upgrade. Like if it's not better than Upgrade, I'm not interested. Fair enough. Let's move on. Caveat, Caveat, Caveat, Caveat. Shout outs to Jamie Russell. I feel like he's the only one. Cause when I checked Letterboxd, he rated it. And from memory, he also liked it as well. But yeah, I think it's a Scottish film, but what did you think about Caveat, the creepy bunny film, the creepy, what film bunny,

Oti: Bunny Colvin, The Wire.

KT: No, that little rabbit thing that was like clapping. Do you not remember this film at all? I don't remember this film. So we have spoilers, by the way. So there was a guy that was paid by a friend of a friend to babysit.

Oti: All right. I was like, bunny. What, what did you watch? A Teletubby movie? Are they bunnies?

KT: Teletubbies? No, I think they're like two. I have no idea. Are you sure they're not bunnies? They're absolutely not bunnies. What kind of bunnies have fucked up ears like that?

Oti: All right. Okay. I remember this movie. It was enjoyable. I think I really liked it. There were so many moments, you know, if this movie was called Nope, I'd be like, bro, you should have walked away.

KT: So, but it was an isolated Island.

Oti: Yeah. Like there's so many moments where you'd walk with the character and think this shit is messed up. I don't know why he's thinking that. You go to the island, you find someone locked up, you're like, okay, this is fine. This is cool. Yeah. All right. I'll just need you to chain you up before I leave.

KT: Just casually.

Oti: Just casually. Okay. Hey, this is where, you know, if Jim Carrey was like, Yes Man. No, just no.

KT: Okay. Yeah, but overall I enjoyed it. Like I really enjoyed it. I love the atmosphere created. Obviously it felt low budget cause it probably was low budget, but that didn't bother me. I think the aesthetics really worked. There were obviously jump scares and I thought those were to effect. As well, there are a lot of dumb decisions, but that doesn't make it a dumb movie, but there's nothing wrong with a dumb movie. I'm looking forward to watching Jason X again, as, as, as October comes around. But I really enjoyed Caveat. I think there was a lot of fun to be had. Perhaps a Saturday afternoon, a Saturday matinee. It was, it was iconic enough in the sort of aesthetic that it delivered it kind of felt like, I know we said spoilers, but this, I, I, I, I would hazard to guess that a lot of our patrons haven't watched it, so I won't spoil it, spoil it.

KT: However, there is a storyline in the third act that was a bit cringy and IRL, however. It doesn't take away and it doesn't negate the first two thirds that I really, really enjoyed.

Oti: Yeah, that's good. I think outside of the dumb decisions that no sane person would make, it was, it, I didn't enjoy it as much as you did. It was okay. I think the ending was. Satisfactory as well, it wasn't one of those things that, okay, yeah, you could probably see it coming,

KT: but I see the hand come from the grave for a sequel.

Oti: Yeah. But there's so many stupid decisions in there though. Like if you just want to shout out the TV, this is the movie for you.

KT: Maybe that's why they call it Shudder because we watched this through Shudder, didn't we? Yeah. Hustle. This is the Adam Sandler being a sports agent, a basketball agent.

Oti: I enjoyed it.

KT: It's a bit boring. Queen Latifah was in this. Was she not married to Adam Sandler? 10 out of 10 minus 20 because Adam Sandler's in it. Wow.

Oti: Yeah. Wow. So Queen Latifah makes it a 10 and Adam Sandler takes out 20.

KT: Yes. I, it's not that I don't like him.

Oti: What movies did you watch growing up? If we didn't watch any Adam Sandler,

KT: I watched Mulan. Do you mean as a kid kid? What do you mean as a teenager? Miyazaki films. Hi, Paul. Love you, Paul. Hey, so

Oti: you all about the abs cuts back there

KT: when art imitates life. Am I right?

Oti: Wow. Cause I watched a lot of Adam Sandler. Lock heels.

KT: Like, he just seemed dumb. Like, Happy Gilmore. Because it's dumb, it's very accessible. No, but I just, I personally 'cause I was a bit too young for the audience at the time of Happy Gilmore. So, but even then, like it wasn't as cringey as Jim Carrey is to me. Like, you are a fully grown man and I am a child and even I feel more mature than you. Mm-hmm. It wasn't that level of Adam Sandler, but I just, I don't know. I. I just don't like him. Is that okay? Wild. If they contact us, you'll be interviewing alone. No, thank you.

Oti: No, he's just done a lot. I think I appreciate at least what I watched growing up and. Yeah, very accessible.

KT: What does that have to do with this boring basketball movie?

Oti: Because I don't go in thinking, Oh, Adam Sandler minus 20 already.

KT: But I didn't know. I'm saying that now, after we've watched it, fair enough. Fair enough. Who are you fighting? No one. You find me or are you fighting the system?

Oti: I'm not putting myself out there for Adam Sandler. So,

KT: well, it felt like it felt like the story was an original, I think Winning Time cinematography aside, cause it was very dizzying to look at and we still need to cover. Cause I really liked Winning Time. So I would like to talk about it. But in regards to like sports things, there is, it's, it wasn't that interesting. Cause for me, I don't care about sports. So you need to make the story interesting. You need to make the characters compelling or you don't need to, but it's just, I'm not going to enjoy it if that's the case. I can't think of any positives aside from Queen Latifah. Really? No, honestly, there's, there's nothing else to say about that film.

KT: The last one in the July poll is the Apple TV series Loot. I don't even like Maya Rudolph, but that's a story for another day. Wow, who do you like? It's not that I don't like her, it's just I don't care for her. Like, we get it. Anytime Beyoncé does something, we get it. Anytime Beyoncé does something, you know she's going to turn up on SNL. And do it again. And I remember when she was pregnant with Blue Ivy and then like the hot wings interview of her sweating and stuff like we get it like, and maybe it's just because I didn't, didn't necessarily watch SNL at the time.

Oti: You're projecting Kate McKinnon on her.

KT: No, you're just sharing your hatred for Kate McKinnon. I think. You know, and Hollywood becomes a big wank fest and I think SNL is kind of at the epicenter of that, you know, but if you like them, then the wank fest is great because I love Kenan Thompson. It was fun seeing him at the Emmys. I love Bowen Yang. So whenever there's those sorts of wank fest, I fucking love it. So I can see how people can enjoy my Maya Rudolph, but for me, if we're going back to Loot. Go and watch it. If you happen to have an Apple subscription, go and watch Loot. It is more of a morning breakfast. See, I'm doing it like, you know it's a weekend morning breakfast. Sort of viewing MJ Rodriguez.

KT: As well as Ron Funches and Joel Kim Booster. They were the best parts of the show.

Oti: You know what got me with our show is MJ Rodriguez's voice.

KT: Yeah, you were obsessed. I could not,

Oti: I don't know. It just fucking pulled me in. I don't know what, or just.

KT: Her, her voice was like, honey, it's just, there's so much rain every time she was on the scene

Oti: and she just speak anything and it will just be like, Whoa,

KT: tens, tens, tens across the board. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We should watch Pose then if you love her that much. Yeah. Okay. We have tried Pose and we're going to try and go back. Don't tell anyone. Oti is still best friends with Dave Chappelle. Absolutely recommend. Right. Or kind of recommend if you have time

Oti: for MJ Rodriguez alone,

KT: there we go. All right. Well, let's, let's finish off with the August poll. This got the most votes. We have Prey. So we have two comments here. Julio says, I really liked Prey. Have you guys seen the other Predator movies? Also, I'm guessing The Sandman will be on next month's poll. Well, I have it on the schedule for a couple of weeks, Julio. So hold tight. We will be covering Sandman. Prey. So let's, let's answer Julio's question. Have you seen the other Predator movies?

Oti: I have grew up on Predator, bruv. Love Predator. So watching Prey and knowing that it's a prequel, you know, KT told me about it. I had no idea. I just saw some weird poster and I was like, ah, what is this? I'm into it.

KT: If it's, if it's about natives, I know about it. Ming King Kong. We'd be sniffing all the nipples.

Oti: Yeah. I know the issues you had with it, but I really didn't feel that way. I enjoyed it for what it was and it was fun. Just, just getting the Predator vibes. Like it was super nostalgic. So that worked for me.

KT: Okay. Well, I'll get into my review for a second. Rob says Prey all the way, but mostly cause it's the only one I've seen. Lol. Okay. So Prey, Prey, Prey, Prey, Prey, Prey. I'm not, I'm not your starter pack, right? I am kind of one of the final bosses in the final stages. No, when it talks about, when we talk about representation, because for me, cause how do they do it? They, they filmed it in English and then they did a Comanche dub over that. Right. I say, fuck that noise personally and respectfully. I say, fuck that noise.

Oti: Yeah. And this is why Mel Gibson set a trend. He, the way he did Apocalypto is the same way this would have, should have been done.

KT: Yeah. And, and like, no, but for big up Mel Gibson, I'm, I'm just ignoring you. I'm ignoring you. Okay. So if we're talking about representation for me, it's high time that we get over. Giving cookies to people that do the bare minimum, right? Hollywood has been so it's been so deliberate and it becomes so political. You know, even your best friend, Dave Chappelle, like during the Me Too movement. Everyone was wearing black dresses, but they also couldn't have shown up. They also could have stopped working with the predators. You know what I mean? Like, so it's like, if you want to be about it, be about it. Stop being Gal Gadot singing Imagine. Like if you actually care about representation. Then this should have been in Comanche all the way through, especially because it got confusing because you had like the native tribe. And then I think they were French, but they were both speaking English, but they both didn't understand each other.

KT: You know what I mean? Like basic things like that. And even if you think about like Narcos, it was like that as well. They would be speaking English where it wouldn't even make sense that they would be speaking English, even behind closed doors. They're speaking English to each other. Which doesn't make sense, but obviously it's because audiences are watching it and that sort of thing. Maybe there's a formula to why Disney were also like a money factor, but you know, for Disney being so successful, but I would also say be Matt Damon brave, man. Like for all of the people that can take a chance, Disney would be the one. May people

Oti: are crying. Oh, how could they do this to a Predator like this?

KT: This walk, that's a whole different nonsense. And there was also like internals as well. And it's like, I didn't like it, but to not like it as to be on that side. Like we're not, we're not, we're not in proximity, but we're if we're talking about a line, I'm on that line and I don't like being there.

Oti: Yeah. It's all shit, but I think just so that you're not with them, you'll be like,

KT: yeah, there was a whisper of a kiss. I enjoyed it. Yeah. Yeah. I, but again, if we go back to Prey to me, the story wasn't interesting because. It's, it kind of felt like they were just putting on skin, like it could have been any fucking character. It could have been, what's her name? Cher Horowitz, the Clueless. Like it could have been that. It could have been because it's like I'm a young woman and I want to be independent and I'm like Cool, bro. We've seen this a million times, even in Disney slash Pixar IP. What's so good about this, you know? Like again, because we're seeing richness because Taika Waititi, Sterlin Harjo are really bringing it to the forefront and also behind the screen.

KT: We're seeing direct. There's some writers really coming in Rez Dogs. Unfortunately, Rutherford Falls is being canceled. Quantum Blood, which I do want us to cover on the podcast as well. We'll have a fight. We need to, we need to, isn't it so interesting. We talk about a lot of indigenous stuff. We haven't done native American stories at Rez Dogs in a couple of weeks time. But my point is. If we're going to do it, we're going to do it fucking right. And it's high time we're in the 2020s. You don't get cookies anymore for not putting on blackface because you want to be a stunt double. Like you don't get cookies for that. Cookies are good. Cookies are good. I would say I'm consistent.

KT: I do have a lot of native takes, but I am consistent in the sense that. This wasn't interesting to me. So it's not just cause there are natives in it that I'm going to automatically like it. So that's kudos to me. I know what I like. I have done the work. Shout outs to Amber Midthunder because she also showed up in one of the best roles, like guest star roles in Rez Dogs. And it was really nice. It was really nice to see her there. But yeah, I, I I'm glad it exists and I'm glad that, you know there are a lot of native people that love it because obviously it's a lot better than Yellowstone. You know, that, that continues to leverage. Oh, can I just, can I quickly mention something?

KT: There is an Australian. Slash Indonesian production that is about to come out, or it's already come out called Bali 2002. And I'm pretty sure it's about a terrorist attack, not a natural disaster. Why are we, cause I know we're centering whiteness. Why are we still doing that? Why can't we just make the story about Indonesian people? You know what I mean? And there was also that recent, was it in the Philippines? There was a, like a rescue, like a rescue mission

Oti: stuck in,

KT: I think you see what I'm saying. And then you look at the poster, it's got all the white people and then you look at the cast. Like I just, I've had enough, I've had enough. So I personally don't want to watch it. Like I know it's just going to make me mad. It's different. It's different to like Hotel Mumbai. For example, because it was actually about the story. It just happened to have expats and tourists in the area. But I just wanted to mention that cause we're talking about representation and that sort of thing. And yes, I did throw everything at the TV when Mike White kept showing up at the Emmys, but the world exists for all the white men.

KT: Was I wrong? Or was I wrong? Let's move on to something lighter, Indian Matchmaking.

Oti: Oh, yeah, it's fun. It's like, you'd get, I don't know, sometimes I think I'll, I won't be as angry as I would like just watching them and, you know, I'll put too much stock in it. Yeah. And then you watch this ridiculous people. Yeah. Make some dumb decisions.

KT: I'm like, what are you doing?

Oti: I don't know. It's, it's wild. It's, it's, it's like, it's not 90 Day level addictive, but it's definitely enjoyable.

KT: Yeah. I think something like you talk about being frustrated with a show, you wouldn't expect to be frustrated with a show like this part of what annoys me about a lot of, you can't even call them contestants, whatever the people that are on Indian Matchmaking, I am by no means a traditional brown woman, right? So I would never, well, not that like Tongans have like arranged marriages and that sort of thing, but I wouldn't dabble in something that I know doesn't align with my progressive sort of views, right? Why the fuck go on a show then you knew it was like about matchmaking and it's not necessarily about love, right?

KT: So why ask to be match made and then be like, Oh, I need to be attracted. Then fuck off. Go on like Love Island or something. Why are you on? You see what I'm saying? No, one's forcing you to be there. And if you're going to be there and you know, this is what it is. Why are you complaining? Aside from that, those that are in the process and really go with it. I enjoy. And I'm with you on that. And I guess if we're talking about layers, there are some Indian critics. That don't necessarily like it. Oh,

Oti: tell me more.

KT: Well, I think it's like, you know, how we're talking about all your favorite black men Will Smith and Chris Rock, you know how you don't like it because then it becomes a global conversation. Even though it's not a conversation for everyone. Mm-hmm, kind of that, like, by having a show about matchmaking, it leaves it open for people to say shitty things. I don't get why they do this actually. Yeah. That's, that's oppressive.

Oti: Mm-hmm. I see that. I see that.

KT: So, yeah. I think it's fun. Like, 'cause I also don't restrict myself to the perceptions of other people. But I understand that other people operate that way, but we had a good time. We really enjoyed Indian Matchmaking. Let's move on. It's ridiculous. Are you ready? Well, I would also like to know what you felt about this actor before and after. I'm talking about They/Them. What did you feel about Kevin Bacon before this film? And what do you feel about Kevin Bacon now?

Oti: I don't know. He's, he's had some hit and miss.

KT: Oh, he's not like, he's not an actor. That's known for quality.

Oti: Not to my knowledge, like I know Kevin Bacon, I know he's there, you know, he's a thing, but I don't think that I go in thinking, Oh, I'm going to watch this, but I think that concept for this movie was good. I saw the ratings first before I saw and I knew anything about the movie and I was like. Surely it can't be this bad, you know, it has like 2%

KT: like people are just being transphobic, homophobic. If they don't like it

Oti: and like watching it, I was like, okay, it's got legs. Yeah, I'm there for it. Like it was enjoyable to a degree. It got halfway through. It got a bit weird. Yeah. Other than that, we've watched was

KT: shit. It made me uncomfortable. A lot of the dialogue and I try to look up the writer and the director. Of this film, I don't know if they're queer, but it felt like it was being used for a concept of a film as opposed to writing from, you see how different, like Fire Island was cause

Oti: Fire Island was fun.

KT: This was meant more, but you see what I'm saying? Like you can tell when people are writing their own stories and they're writing from their own experiences. I don't personally know if this person is queer. But if they are, I would say it's very rude for them to treat characters like this. Like it was very not nice. It felt, it almost felt, I was, I was looking for a watermark of the Christian coalition.

Oti: It was wild. It was wild. And I think the roller coaster, the characters go through. Like, it did feel like those are heated agenda behind it. If you didn't know people better, you know, but geez, like it's, it's. Just go watch it. I think you'll, you, you won't be too disappointed. It won't be anything like 10% bad as the ratings would suggest.

KT: But it was insensitive. It was insensitive to trans people.

Oti: Oh, you think it was insensitive?

KT: I think it was just, they were talking about a boy and a girl's camp. And based on me saying transphobic, you know what happened in that scenario. Also, it was also with non binary people. I didn't like that, but it was the point of the movie, but you see what I'm saying? There's a difference. And we just covered Pussy Valley. Like there's a difference in, there's a difference in covering domestic violence in Pussy Valley. And there's a difference in Doctanian being eaten alive by dogs. You see what I'm saying? There's a, there's a care behind the pen. I didn't like it. What more do you need me to say?

KT: I didn't like it. Fair enough. Just, I need a second. All right, well, let's finish off Rebecca Hall. We talked about, was it called The Night House? We fucking love The Night House. I personally, I think it's one of the only instances that I said that it really took me in the third act. And usually I hate that shit when you have to really pull me in, in the third act, but it was, I love The Night House. Resurrection. So this is Rebecca Hall. Yeah. So this is Rebecca Hall. This is Tim Roth. We're going to say spoiler, spoiler, spoiler. Cause we're going to get into detail about this film, but before we do the spoiler, spoiler, spoiler recommend or not recommend. I don't recommend it either. Now let's spoil it.

Oti: I don't know. I used to think I liked Tim Roth as an actor, but in the, in the things that I've seen him in recently, far out, I'm like it's the same person. Is he just taking Patrick Stewart roles now?

KT: Hey! He does shit now. The Green Room was good.

Oti: Green Room was good. Tell me any other thing he's been in, in the last

KT: American Dad. Not even Family Guy, I'm saying American Dad.

Oti: I don't know, like he just picks ridiculous shit, I think just for the shock factor. Or maybe he needs to pay taxes, I don't know. But wow yeah, Tim Roth, Jesus, I don't know what went wrong there. The movie was so hard to watch. It was so hard to even, it was,

Oti: it was so hard to even like Rebecca Hall as a character and like knowing that she can perform like we, we didn't know how fucking portfolio she's amazing. So I went in with tax and you, you know, Cause we, I think we rented it or some shit like, ah, but it took us

KT: up to the last like 36 hours, 48 hours, whatever it was

Oti: to finish the movie. Yep. It was wild. And then the way it ended, I don't know. I just, I just feel like those there needs to be something said that. There needs to be a fucking refund option for, if you're horribly dissatisfied within a certain hour or within a certain period, get your money back. I think so. Yeah. Because, jeez, what was that?

KT: Like are we going to spoil it or do we want to hear people's thoughts?

Oti: Don't spoil it because I think,

KT: like there were Tyler Perry level storylines in this. And

Oti: I've watched Acrimony.

KT: Right. Yeah. Tyler Perry. Yeah. Tyler Perry.

Oti: Oh, and that was, that was something different.

KT: Taraji P. Henson. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, but there were storylines in this that you wouldn't put in a really serious... Sort of thriller and I don't care how good the actors are there are some storylines You can't make serious. And yeah, you're right. We shouldn't spoil it because I kind of want to hear please watch it Even though we chose not to recommend and we're not going to refund you if you rent it But I want to hear people's thoughts. There was a I think part of it was because, I think I even said it while we were watching it, this feels like an acting class.

KT: Like it feels like a way to get your acting chops, but it doesn't necessarily feel like an actual narrative. Yeah. It's kind of like when you have singers that can sing, but they can't sing, they can't make you feel things, they can't make you tap into the gaps that your parents never gave to you. You know what I mean? Like. There wasn't anything compelling, like, it was kind of like Rebecca Hall was playing charades the whole time, and we were sick of trying to guess what she was doing.

Oti: Yeah, and you can tell that, just, the script was just bad from the get go. Yeah, it was,

KT: it was, they were, they were, they were double spacing that shit. Yeah,

Oti: they really were.

KT: But yeah, to me, if we start talking about it in spoilers, it's just going to get wild. And then you guys might not watch it. Actually while we're here, I keep forgetting what it's called. The Jake Gyllenhaal film. What movie is that? Was it called Identity? The, the one, the Denis Villeneuve. The one with the spiders. What do you actually, I think I enjoyed that more than this. This was kind of unbearable. That was good.

Oti: It's just

KT: females.

Oti: who,

KT: who, who friends and lovers. Thank you so much for joining us on this mammoth. Two month, and we'll see you in a couple of weeks for September, but thank you for joining us on the July and August Ref Plus. Is there anything you want to end on, my love?

Oti: No, we love you. We love the support.

KT: We love you guys. hopefully you're well and you're keeping warm or you're keeping cool depending on where you are. In the world, we love you so much. And thank you for joining us along the ride. It's been wild. Goodbye. Thank you for joining us. See ya. Bye. Yeah.
