0:04KT: It's another week in the For Your Reference household. It's been a while, but it is another interview. Intro, Oti.

0:12Oti: Mm-hmm.

0:12KT: I think the last time we did this was actually for Jordan Peele. Our very first interview. Thank you to all of our friends and lovers that love and support us so much. Like we mentioned, Jordan Peele was our first interview for the For Your Reference podcast. Um, I also got a little cheeky note at the end, um, saying that we interviewed Jordan Peele, now Keke Palmer, perhaps Daniel Kaluuya,

0:37KT: And that's why Oti gets locked away for the nasty friends and lovers. But, um, thank you so much to the team, global team, um, at Sony for the opportunity to be able to chat to Keke Palmer. Oti has allowed me to start using Canva, but I don't think that's the reason why we got this interview. But, um. Very excited friends and lovers for all of you to check out One of Them Days. You know, we talk about independent media, we talk about, you know, supporting the voices that potentially should be heard in more spaces, and maybe that includes your nasty friends and lovers as well. 1:32KT: As you know, we love Keke Palmer. Um, I haven't even listened to it yet because I'm so nervous. How was the interview, Oti?

1:40Oti: It was good. Short, sweet, and, and very informative,

1:44KT: short, sweet, and well-rounded.

1:46Oti: Mm.

1:48KT: How did you feel about One of Them Days? Just before we share the interview, Oti.

1:52Oti: It was a very fun movie. Um, covered a lot of themes in there as well, while having fun with it.

1:58KT: Keke will always be great. Um, you know, we, we talked about, Nope, I recently did. Uh, over at the B side we talked about, um, Queen Latifah and Joyful Noise. Keke Palmer was also in that as well. Um, but you know. Uh, well-developed talent. Keke Palmer. SZA did so well. I think I kept forgetting that this is her first feature film performance. Mm. You've got Katt Williams in there. We're covering gentrification. Syreeta Singleton, Lawrence Lamont. Issa Rae producing. It's a great time. Sony did a creative lab as well, and as we know friends and lovers, you need to run those numbers up so we can see more of them.

2:40KT: But we have nineties fine male leads in this film. We've got comedy, we've got it all. Like we just want to laugh, Oti. Well, where's Taye Diggs? I didn't

I know we don't have a lot of time, so I'm just going to get straight up into it. You are so great in this leading role as Dreux in One of Them Days. You're also an executive producer, credits, credits, credits in this film. Boyz n the Hood, Insecure, cover themes of gentrification, but there's also a lot of joy that comes through. Trying to get through and make it through and One of Them Days is absolutely one of those films. How was it being able to channel in all of your energies in One of Them Days?

4:04Keke: Oh my gosh, it was so awesome, because to your point, like, when I think about those classic comedies that I loved as a kid, I love the fact that it wasn't just, oh, we're just being funny and silly for the sake of it, it always drew drove back to a, an important theme. Like, I'll never forget when, you know, they, you know, when Craig's dad said, put the gun down. You know, you live to fight another day. And what that meant at a time where we were really realizing the, the, the implications of gun violence. And so, with One of Them Days, and. Gentrification and just systemic issues and, you know, how community plays a big role in that. I felt like it was a great opportunity to highlight things that are important to me, because I don't know how I get through anything without my friends and my family.

4:44Keke: And then also the realities of what it means to be a young adult right now. Like, baby, I just don't have it. You know, sometimes you just don't have it and, you know, you have it one of those days.

4:53KT: Yeah, absolutely. And I, I feel like Katt Williams, maybe not like, um, a Furious in Boyz n the Hood, but he definitely has some wise advice throughout the film as well. Um, Dreux is very relatable in that. I think all of us are trying to do better. We're trying to get to where we need to go, but we're also holding down our best friends, um, as well as the loved ones around us. And I want to thank you so much for your time. Like, we love, love, and we'll continue to love you forever. Um, and I want to wrap up with our final question. And we finish off our reviews with a recommendation. So what would you pair with One of Them Days as a double feature?

5:29Keke: Oh, that's so good. Does it have to be new or can it be like something old?

5:33KT: Well, I go on where you're going. I wherever you're going.

5:37Keke: Okay, a double feature with One of Them Days, I would have to couple it with BAPS, which I think was like a little bit before its time. Satire of the American black woman and those two characters. And just again, Robert Townsend, he's such a classic, uh, writer, director, actor that I love. And so I'm going to go ahead and give it to BAPS as another, you know, buddy, female comedy. Cause you know, I think from then to now, I think those are the only two that I can really think of.
