Director Trivia
Table talk from the degustation — context, behind-the-scenes, and the odd easter egg.
Context
5Ratcatcher opened the 2026 Reference Degustation of Lynne Ramsay, the show's first female and first Scottish director, following runs on Miyazaki, Taika Waititi, Quentin Tarantino, Takashi Miike, Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee.
The film is set during a bin workers' strike, which is why rubbish piles up in the streets; Oti only learned this after watching, and it changed how he read the film's squalor.
Ramsay's Die My Love, starring Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence, had just been released when the run began; the hosts missed its media screening and planned it as a later course.
We Need to Talk About Kevin was released in 2011, and its subject, a mass killing at an American school, has kept it feeling timely ever since.
In the set menu KT reads out, Ramsay's features run Ratcatcher, Morvern Callar, We Need to Talk About Kevin, You Were Never Really Here, with Joaquin Phoenix, and Die My Love.
Behind the Scenes
4Ratcatcher was written and directed by Lynne Ramsay, with a cast including Tommy Flanagan, William Eadie, Mandy Matthews, Michelle Stewart and Lynne Ramsay Jr.
Lynne Ramsay wrote the screenplay with Rory Stewart Kinnear, adapting the novel by Lionel Shriver, and also directed the film herself.
The film stars Tilda Swinton as Eva, the mother at its centre, John C. Reilly as her husband Franklin and Ezra Miller as their son Kevin.
The soundtrack includes Ham and Eggs and Nobody's Child by Lonnie Donegan, Everyday by Buddy Holly and Mother's Last Word to Her Son by Washington Phillips, upbeat-sounding songs set against grim moments.
Easter Egg
3Like Ratcatcher, the film opens on a shot of curtains; in Ramsay's films the windows are always open and the curtains flowing, a motif the hosts added to their scorecard.
The episode title, Deliver Us From Eva, borrows the name of the film starring Gabrielle Union and LL Cool J, Oti's suggestion locked in on air.
