With thanks to the teams at Warner Bros AUS & Universal AUS, we had the privilege of attending a special press event where director, writer, and producer James Gunn unveiled the teaser trailer for the upcoming Superman film.

Hosted by Eric Davis, and attended by a select fifty journalists from Australia, China, Japan, and across Asia, the conversation gave us an exclusive window into Gunn’s vision for the Man of Steel. From our virtual front-row seat, we experienced an early look at what is shaping up to be a resonant, rejuvenating portrayal of a character synonymous with heroism.

A Teaser That Tells a New Story
The teaser trailer itself presented a thoughtful tapestry of what we can expect come July. Gunn’s Superman isn’t merely a caped icon with super-strength—he’s a character poised between external challenges and internal struggles. There’s a clear focus on compassion, vulnerability, and the importance of kindness. Gunn emphasized a version of Clark Kent defined as much by his internal moral compass as by his extraordinary abilities. We saw moments that highlight not only world-saving feats, but also Superman’s quest to better understand himself, his place on Earth, and the relationships that define him.

The Superman We’ve Been Waiting For
In the Q&A session, Gunn highlighted David Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman as both authentically hopeful and deeply human. Trained at Juilliard and dedicated to meticulous preparation, Corenswet brought both physicality (those iconic shoulders!) and genuine warmth to the role. According to Gunn, every take felt honest and true, embodying the Boy Scout optimism and humble sincerity we associate with Superman.

But Gunn didn’t shy away from the complexity: this Superman faces darkness in the world, and his choice to remain hopeful is that much more profound. The film acknowledges that optimism is more meaningful when it shines against a backdrop of hardship. “He’s dealing with hope and optimism in very difficult, dark times,” Gunn noted, suggesting that the movie will strike a balance between classic ideals and modern relevance.

An Intriguing Supporting Cast
We also learned that Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane brings formidable journalistic chops, conviction, and wit—making it clear why someone like Superman would be drawn to her. Meanwhile, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor promises to be an exciting and layered adversary, an intellectual equal whose motives and methods are sure to keep Superman on his toes. And yes, Krypto, Superman’s super-dog, is in the mix, adding a heartfelt and humorous dynamic that reflects our world’s relationship to heroic symbols and complicated pets alike.

Score and Nostalgia Reimagined
The teaser’s music nods to John Williams’s iconic original theme, but composer John Murphy gives it a fresh twist that underscores both hope and a subtle melancholy. Gunn explained that music has been integral to the process, guiding the tone on set and shaping the emotional core of the film. Expect a score-driven story this time around, one that relies less on pop needle-drops and more on orchestral grandeur to inform every beat of Superman’s journey.

Informed by the Past, Forging a New Path
Gunn acknowledged the lineage of the Superman character—from the Christopher Reeve era to Zack Snyder’s reinvention—while emphasizing his personal attachment to the comic source material. The result is a Superman story that embraces the traditional values of truth and justice, yet speaks to a contemporary moment. This is a Superman who can still inspire awe, not by punching planets, but by embodying hope when it’s hardest to find.

Our Take

Gunn’s film looks to be a beacon of hope not just for DC fans, but for anyone yearning for a hero who believes in the better angels of our nature.
